What to give for an anniversary: ideas that really work

Anniversaries have a catch: every year the bar goes up. What was a lovely surprise the first year is “the usual” by the fifth. Here's what works, organized by stage of the relationship, plus something we've learned delivering orders: the time it arrives matters almost as much as what arrives.

First anniversary: clarity over size

In the first year, the tone of the relationship is still taking shape, so the gift says a lot. A bouquet of twelve or twenty roses with chocolates and a handwritten card communicates exactly what it should, without overdoing it.

If you want it to be memorable, a ribbon with the name and date is an inexpensive touch people keep. We've seen years-old ribbons taped to a mirror.

Three to ten years: change the format, not the quantity

Once there have been several bouquets, what surprises isn't adding roses but changing the shape. A rose heart, a book-style box that opens, a cylinder: the same flower, a different presentation. It usually makes a bigger impression than going from twenty-four to fifty roses in the same old bouquet.

It's also the time to add something that isn't a flower: a bottle, a big teddy bear, a chocolate chest with letters that spell out a message. See the rose hearts.

For milestone anniversaries, the display is designed for the photo: go bigger in volume, not in the number of extras.

Big anniversaries: think about the photo

Ten, fifteen, twenty years call for a piece that takes up space and is remembered: a buchón bouquet, a large-format heart, a big box. These are orders best scheduled days in advance, especially if the date falls in peak season.

A practical tip: if there's going to be a family gathering, have the arrangement arrive before the guests. The surprise works better in private, and the photo looks better without people around.

If you like the tradition of anniversary materials

There's a custom that assigns a material to each anniversary, and it's a handy excuse to get it right. You don't have to follow it to the letter, but it sparks ideas:

  • 1 year, paper: a real, handwritten letter with the bouquet.
  • 2 years, cotton: a teddy bear, which also lasts.
  • 5 years, wood: a heart mounted on a wooden base.
  • 10 years, tin or aluminum: something in a metal box or a large-format display.
  • 15 years, crystal: a preserved rose under a glass dome.
  • 25 years, silver: the year for the big piece, no question.

By budget, straight up

  • Up to $150.000: a rose box with Ferrero Rocher, or a dozen-rose bouquet with chocolates.
  • Between $200.000 and $400.000: a large bouquet, a heart in a box, or a cylinder, with add-ons.
  • $500.000 and up: large-format hearts, buchón bouquets and displays with liquor.

Add delivery depending on the town and, if you like, add-ons: chocolates, a balloon with a message or a personalized ribbon.

If you're long-distance

It's more common than it seems: one of you travels, works away or lives in another country. What works best is coordinating the delivery for a time when you can be on a video call, so the surprise happens “together.” We let you know when the order leaves and when it's delivered, precisely for that.

If you live outside Colombia, here we explain how to send flowers to Medellín from abroad.

What really makes the difference

Three things, in order of impact, and none of them costs much:

  • The timing. Arriving at the office in the morning, in front of everyone, is not the same as at eight at night at home. Choose the moment on purpose.
  • The message. Written by you, with a specific memory. Anyone can write “Happy anniversary.”
  • The surprise. If they don't know it's coming, the gift is worth twice as much.

Common mistakes

  • Ordering the same day. You can, and we deliver in 3 to 4 hours, but you don't get to choose the time.
  • Sending it to an office on a Friday afternoon. Half the team has already left and the arrangement spends the weekend alone.
  • Repeating last year's gift exactly. If you're going to repeat a product, at least change the color or the format.
  • Not telling anyone about the surprise. If it's going to the office, make sure someone is in the loop to receive it if the person is in a meeting.

Ideas that aren't flowers (or not only flowers)

Not everyone gets excited about a bouquet, and that's fine. What does work for an anniversary is a gift with something made especially for that person. Alternatives we see go over well:

  • A chocolate chest with letters that spell out the name or a short phrase.
  • A heart with liquor, for someone who enjoys a bottle more than a vase.
  • Preserved roses, which stay as a keepsake and need no care.
  • A big teddy bear, which, for younger couples, still works better than you'd expect.
  • A large-format box that combines flowers, chocolates and a personal touch.

The combination that almost never fails: something to enjoy that day and something that stays. A fresh arrangement plus a preserved rose, for example.

How to set up the surprise, step by step

Surprises that go well are planned more carefully than it seems. This is the order we recommend:

  • 1. Decide where. Home or office changes the whole gift: at the office there's an audience and it has to be easy to carry; at home you can go big.
  • 2. Make sure they'll be there. With any excuse, or by asking someone you trust. It's the step people skip most and the one that ruins the most deliveries.
  • 3. Choose the time. Mid-morning at the office, or late afternoon at home. Avoid lunchtime.
  • 4. Write the card before ordering. Calmly, not rushing through the form.
  • 5. Leave their phone number and yours. If something goes wrong, it gets sorted out in two minutes instead of losing the surprise.

Frequently asked questions

How far in advance should you order?

One day is enough to choose the time comfortably. On big dates —Valentine's Day, Mother's Day, Love & Friendship Day— two or three days.

Can it be delivered to an office?

Yes, and it's one of the most requested options. Leave the full name, floor or department and a phone number; in buildings with a front desk, it sometimes has to be left with the doorman.

What gift works if they don't like flowers?

A chocolate chest with letters, a box with liquor or a big teddy bear. Preserved roses, too: they need no care and don't wilt.

Can I send it anonymously?

Yes. We write the card with the text you give us, and you can leave it unsigned. We still need your contact information to coordinate delivery.

If you know the date but not the gift, write to us: we'll coordinate delivery at whatever time you want in Medellín and the Aburrá Valley. See anniversary ideas.
